19th President of the United States RUTHERFORD B. HAYES SCARCE fully handwritten autograph letter and address panel penned in February, 1885.  OVER 75+ WORDS ENTIRELY IN HAYES' HAND, with reference to the "art of war", and a QUOTE FROM ABRAHAM LINCOLN, "To care for him who hath borne the battle and for his orphans and widows".
 
In this fantastic handwritten letter Hayes not only makes mention of the civil war but he also quotes one of Abraham Lincoln's most famous quotes from his second inaugural address. 
 
 
Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822 – 1893) was the 19th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1877, until March 4th 1881. Hayes became president after the very controversial compromise of  1877, he lead the country out of the reconstruction era after the civil war, and promoted civil service. Hayes also fought in the American civil war.

Document has been archivally mended on the back as shown. Top half of the original letter is missing, but a can still be read in full on the back from a newspaper clipping. Document also has some staining consistent with age. Finally there is a burn hole that goes through the document. Ink is bold and clear.
