SAMUEL L. CLEMENS spectacular, highly desirable, autograph including his hand penned most famous quotation signed by the historic author who was better known by his pen name of MARK TWAIN. Clemens has written "We ought never to do wrong when anyone is looking. Truly yous Mark Twain Jan. 18/1900". The signature was cut from an autograph book containing many prominent figures of the early 20th century.
Clemens signed quotations for autograph seekers, this one in particular went on to become his most famous. The quote was from his short story "A Double-Barreled Detective Story", a parody of Sherlock Holmes. History Channel's "Pawn Stars" had the same exact quotation signed by Twain dated the same month and year that they sold to Katie Couric for $12,000.

SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (1835 - 1910) better known by his pen name MARK TWAIN, was an American author and humorist. He wrote "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and its sequel, "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", the latter often called "the Great American Novel".
Item is in fine condition, signature has been mounted to heavy card stock by the original collector. Previous signs of mounting on verso. Some toning throughout. Pencil mark to the bottom right denoting "212" in an unknown hand.
