JOHN HANCOCK (1737 – 1793) Authentic, fully handwritten and partially printed ship’s manifest document written entirely in his own hand and signed as “Thos Hancock” by the then 25-year old fledgling partner on behalf of his Uncle’s “House of Hancock” mercantile business. Nearly 60 words, characters and flourishes entirely in Hancock’s elaborate, flowing script.
 
Dated "Boston, June 16, 1762", Hancock has also written the Ship's cargo in the blank left margin. Hancock ships "10 bundles of hay" on the authorization of Sir Jeffery Amherst, Crown Governor of Virginia, an officer in the British Army and later Commander-in-Chief of the Forces.
 
Completely handwritten by John Hancock Document measures 9 inches by 4.5 inches on laid paper.
 
BACKGROUND:  Hancock had been helping his Uncle with the shipping business since his father died in 1744. On January 1, 1763, 7 months after this document was filled out, Thomas Hancock had sent business letters to his customers notifying them that he had “taken my Nephew Mr. John Hancock, into Partnership with me, having had long Experience of his Uprightness, & great Abilities for Business...”
 
JOHN HANCOCK was a merchant, statesman and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of Massachusetts. He is remembered for his large and stylish signature on the Declaration of Independence.
