American Founding Father, 4th president of the United States, and primary drafter of the U.S. Constitution JAMES MADISON personally owned and signed 1775 copy of "A Narrative of the Indian Wars in New England" from Madison's personal library. The book is in its original binding, the same binding and pages as when James Madison held it in his hands and read it 200+ years ago. Signed by Madison on the title page with his ownership signature as "Js Madison". One can't help but imagine how this book may have influenced Madison's thoughts and ideas when founding the Country.

PROVENANCE:
This book was originally owned by James Madison who is the first owner of the book we can identify. From there this book descended in the family of United State Representative William Appleton, his family coat of arms is stamped in the book several times. The book was then acquired by Charles R. Varney, his bookplate is affixed to the inside flap of the front cover.

In 1844, straddled with debt Dolley Madison was forced to sell the Estate of Montpelier, including some of Madison's papers, house furnishings, and Madison's books. To this day the library at Montpelier is comprised in-part of period appropriate books as most books actually belonging to Madison have been lost to the sands of time. This is one of a handful of identified books having belonged to president Madison. An image of this book is contained within the database of Montpelier.

The book is in good overall condition for its age. Obvious wear to spine and covers, some separation at the ends of the covers to the spine. The binding of the book itself is still in good condition for it's 200 years of age. Bookplate affixed to front cover. An engraving of Madison has been attached to the title page of the book. A few stamps of the Appleton family coat of arms throughout the book, including to the reverse of the title page. Toning and foxing to pages throughout.
