** James Garfield Autograph With Fantastic Handwritten and Signed Provenance From First Lady Lucretia Garfield **

20th President of the United States JAMES A. GARFIELD and his wife and First Lady LUCRETIA GARFIELD dual signed clipped address panel. James Garfield signs the panel in his typical fashion "J A Garfield", he also handwrites "Hiram Portage Co[ounty] Ohio".

Exceptional handwritten and signed provenance on the reverse from Garfield's wife and former First Lady Lucretia who notes that the autograph is "From an old envelope addressed to me by General Garfield with Mrs. cut off".

Interestingly, James Garfield signs with a capitalized "A" middle initial characteristic of his Presidential style autograph, though we think this signature is likely signed during his tenure as a member of Congress.

A Major General in the Civil War, Garfield served in the Union Army from 1861 - 1863. After being elected President in 1881, Garfield lived to serve 199 days in office, the final two months of which he was rendered incapacitated by an assassin's bullet.
