The portrait was originally taken by Edward Beirstadt in 1875 while Garfield was serving as a member of the House of Representatives. Garfield has signed the portrait in his typical fashion "J. a. Garfield". Presidential signed images are highly valued by collectors. Having been assassinated only one year into office one can imagine how few signed images of Garfield exist.
