Martyred 20th President of the United States JAMES A. GARFIELD virtually unobtainable card SIGNED AS PRESIDENT. Card is dated at the bottom left "5-15-81", less than 50 days later Garfield would be mortally wounded by an assassin making him the second shortest serving American President in history. Garfield has signed this card with a large and bold signature. 
 
After he became President, Garfield changed his signature.  He signed his name in full and changed the style of the the "a" in his signature from lowercase "a" to capital "A".  Garfield's presidential style signatures are highly distinguishable from pre-presidential examples.
