Ivory and wood cane with GEORGE WASHINGTON and MOUNT VERNON history. This cane has been crafted from a tree that Washington planted at his beloved Mount Vernon estate. A gold band around the shaft reads "Cut in 1841 from a tree planted by George Washington at Mt. Vernon". The head of the cane reads "*George Darracott : Boston".

George Darracott was a prominent citizen of Boston, Massachusetts and especially enjoyed the political life it had to offer. He had a love for history, he was the manager and director of the Bunker Hill Monument Association for over 30 years.

PROVENANCE:
By the early 1840's John Augustine Washington was struggling to keep the Mount Vernon plantation afloat. Even still, many citizens from across the country would make a pilgrimage to the famous founding fathers estate on a yearly basis. Many of those who did make the trip sought to bring a piece of Mount Vernon home with them, John Augustine would often offer branches of wood from trees planted by Washington that could be turned into souvenirs. It is likely that this was acquired by George Darracott while visiting Mount Vernon in the 1840's.

This cane was originally auctioned off in 2017 by Skinner Auctioneers; it is the only one of its kind we could find.

The cane measures approx. 33 inches. It has blemishes, wear, some chipping and separations to the wood, as shown. Cane is still sturdy and in good condition for 175+ years worth of use. Missing tip.
