Nightingale urgently sends mail to Bombay (which became Mumbai in 1995). Nightingale had a lifelong interest in the sanitation of Bombay and referenced it in several of her works including 'Observations', written in 1863, where she described the insufficient water supply and sanitary amenities.

"...as letters, kindly put on the additional stamps necessary, for which I enclose £1 [penciled in margin] (charging me if not enough) apologizing for trouble I am giving you, on the plea that the four [sic] to Bombay must go to - day. Pray believe me yours faithfully Florence Nightingale 
O Creighton(?) Esq"
 
Letter measures approx. 6.75"x4.5", entire encapsulate measures 10"x6.5". Portions of the letter have been archivally mended on the reverse. Surface wear and a few small regions of paper-loss as shown. Handwriting and ink are still incredibly bold. Two horizontal and one vertical mailing folds.
