President of the Confederate States of America JEFFERSON DAVIS (1808 - 1889) handwritten autograph letter written in the third-person and signed as "Secretary of War.
Over 40+ words in Davis' hand declining a dinner invitation. Letter is not signed by Davis but signed only in his official capacity as the 23rd United States "Secretary of War" under President Franklin Pierce.
A remarkable association piece with Davis as "Secretary of War" for someone arguably responsible for one of the single greatest "Wars" this country has every seen.

In total, Davis writes:
"The Secretary of War returns his thanks to the Messrs. Willards for their polite invitation to dinner tomorrow. He regrets that it will not be in his power to accept it - but will take some occasion to pay his respects hereafter in person.
