Iconic American Nurse and Founder of the American Red Cross CLARA BARTON wonderful handwritten biblical quotation in handsome vintage framed display. Indirectly at least, Barton seems to be referencing two of the core principles of Nursing – to selflessly care for others, and to wash to maintain health and well-being. A touching sentiment from one of America's finest women.

Barton writes:

"Do the duly next you, and be content to wash seven times in Jordan.

With loving regard for my young American girls.

Clara Barton

Washington, DC USA"

Barton appears to be paraphrasing the biblical story of Namaan, from the Old Testament, 2 Kings 5:10 - 14: "But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: 'Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.'" An important Syrian General, Namaan is told by the prophet Elisha to wash in the dirty Jordan river to cure his leprosy. Against his personal protests, he eventually did as he was told and came out healed.
