Daniel Ricketson was a lifelong citizen of Brooklawn and most notably a close friend of Henry David Thoreau. He was also a Quaker and ardent abolitionist. When Dickens was coming to town to give a speech, Ricketson wrote to his mutual friend saying "I am but a plain American citizen...& can offer you nothing further than a comfortable bed, a warm corner at our open wood fire and plain fare"
