Legendary scientist and the father of evolutionary theory CHARLES DARWIN hand-written full page of mathematical calculations unsigned. The top portion of the manuscript features mathematical notations and equations. It seems Darwin was setting up proportions, Darwin writes in part "F:W :: BC. : CA". By the mid to lower portion Darwin is writing out a problem "If 16 men can pull 120 lb at [sic] rule...". Included is a letter of provenance from Sir Hedley Atkins a curator of the Charles Darwin museum. A remarkable example of the genius at work.
Sale includes accompanying original LOA from the highly-respected JSA (James Spence Authentication) who have thoroughly examined the autograph and certify its authenticity.

Darwins handwritten words read:
"By measuring the circumference & height of chain...w1.=15.99. If 16 men can pull 120 lb at [sic] rule, how many men can pull 50 lb. 120lb : 50lb : 16 men : X
Whatever x may be (as there will be only one man) his force must be increased who of 1 to x, instead of as now 1:16".
Atkins provenance letter reads:
"From Sir Hedley Atkins KBE
Dear, Mr [sic]
I am afraid I cannot spare any of the Charles Darwin letters which we possess here, but I am sure he would have liked me to have acceded to your request in some way. I came across the enclosed a few years ago in the back of a drawer. It is all in Charles Darwin's writing and appears to be some sort of calculation I think connected with one of the wells in the garden which at one time was the only source of water. It is all very mysterious but perhaps you can think of a better explanation as you know he never did like mathematics or calculations. This is also to wish you a happy new year. Yours sincerely, Hedley Atkins".
