Legendary 16th President of the United States, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, autograph Civil War date naval appointment for William Green. Lincoln promotes Green to Boatswain and signs the appointment with a bold full signature as "Abraham Lincoln". Document is countersigned by his Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles.


Signed on September 27th, 1862, Lincoln autographs this document just 10 days after the battle of Antietam which to this day is still the bloodiest day not only of the civil war but in all of American history. We can only imagine the immense weight on Lincoln's mind at the time of signing this document.The document is also signed the same week (5 days after) he released his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation setting a date for the freedom of all enslaved people.
