Nearly 25 years after the infamous duel in which he killed Alexander Hamilton, Burr signs the routine correspondence penned in the hand of a secretary. 

 

Burr was a lawyer practicing in New York City when he assisted his friend and client Martha Bradstreet in addressing various legal issues over the course of a decade, beginning in 1818. Bradstreet (1780-1871) was the granddaughter of General John Bradstreet, who played a major role in the French and Indian War. She pursued legal claims to land inherited from him and other relatives in the Mohawk River Valley in New York State.


Iron gall ink partial "burn" through the "A" in Burr's signature, as shown. Mailing folds consistent with age and handling, as shown. Letter is in otherwise exceptional condition for nearly 200 years old.
